Yoga Room at Musubi Dojo

Primarily an Aikido Sensei, Susan Perry has taught Yoga since 1987. She began teaching at Pitzer College and in the early 1990s began offering a class at the dojo. Susan Perry sensei, one of the founders of Musubi Dojo, began Yoga when she started her Aikido training in 1978. She says that Yoga has helped her maintain flexibility through some major injuries and as she ages.

Flexibility helps to maintain youthful energy and, by increasing flexibility, to avoid injury. Those injuries Susan didn't avoid became her teachers in how to use Yoga as a natural healing resource to recover range of movement as well as to eliminate pain.

A long time ago, Aikido was not as well worked out as it is now in most dojo and so training was more dangerous. It was during that time that I suffered my worst injuries. But all I wanted to do was to return to the mat for more Aikido training. I was absolutely relentless in my search for techniques of dealing with pain and bodily damage. My search for resources to stay healthy and active has led me to meet and train with amazing movement and energy teachers. Some were Yoga teachers; others were teachers of movement, energy, or martial arts. What they all have in common is a natural curiousity about how to liberate the body. This study, then, provides me with the richness and depth of an eclectic background . Everytime I step in front of a class I ask my class participants what they're suffering from and we go from there. For this reason, I call my classes, "Exploration" classes. We do our best work when we begin with a fresh look at the landscape and then find the resources that fit it.

"Slow Down"
Identifying the problem is the essential (and hardest) part to making things better. Each of us finds obstacles in life. But rather than viewing these as limiting factors to an otherwise happy life, I view them as temporary (maybe uninvited) visitors here to take us deeper in our understanding of life's experiences. The most common instruction I give is to "slow down". Everyone comes to class with tightness they feel somewhere and so for everyone in class there is an appropriate practice. Each class we begin with a simple movement practice to calm our mind and to release tension in our body. Slowly we move into a deeper Yoga practice. Yoga takes some dedication to continue on a regular basis; but for any single class, the practice is not that hard. My classes welcome all levels of ability.
